Types of Poison Ivy


There are different types of poison ivy that can cause irritation of the skin. The three types include, poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. These three different plants can cause the same symptoms but the plants look different. What does poison ivy look like?

Poison Ivy
Poison ivy, also known as toxicodendron radicans is a poisonous plant found in North America. Poison ivy leaves contain oils called urushiol which is an allergen that causes skin rash. The smallest amount of urushiol can still cause serious rash. Here is a poison ivy picture, it is easily spotted by its three leaves. It is usually found in heavily wooded areas and can grow as vines or shrubs. If you see a plant that may be poison ivy, stay away from it and try to avoid any direct contact.



Poison Oak
Poison oak, also known as toxicodendron pubescens or toxicodendron diversilobum. Toxicodendron pubescens normally grows in the eastern parts of the United States, while toxicodendron diversilobum is found on the western part of the United States. Poison oak has similar characteristics as poison ivy. Poison oak has three leaves, except its leaves are shaped like oak tree leaves. Additionally, poison oak has the same poison ivy symptoms.






Poison Sumac
Poison sumac, also known as toxicodendron vernix is considered the most toxic plant of them all. It is mostly found in the eastern parts of the United States and Canada. Poison sumac likes to grow in wet soils, like swamps. Poison sumac looks very different compared to poison ivy and poison oak. It has long stems with several leaves on each stem. Poison sumac can grow as high as 30 feet. Poison sumac can cause rash in the lungs if the plant is burned and the smoke inhaled. This can lead to bleeding of the lungs and eventually suffocation.





Becoming familiar with the three different types of poisonous plants will help you prevent any future exposure. If you can identify these plants, you will be able to avoid them and save yourself from getting any sort of undesirable rashes.
